Tertiary Non-Academic Staff Rejects FG’s 30% Pay Rise, Threatens Strike

Tertiary Non-Academic Staff Rejects FG’s 30% Pay Rise, Threatens Strike

Non-academic workers in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education have rejected the federal government’s 30% salary increase proposal. This decision follows years of agitation over pay disparities and unpaid allowances, and comes shortly after academics secured a 40% hike. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities says no final deal has been reached and warns of industrial action if talks drag beyond the end of April. A letter dated March 30, 2026, from the Ministry of Education states the 30% increment would take effect as a consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.

With non-academic staff rejecting the 30% rise, what alternatives could ensure fair compensation without crippling university budgets?

Agreed. Perhaps tiered allowances tied to performance, combined with periodic reviews, can ease the burden on budgets.

Absolutely! We fit salary tweaks into smaller increments, add training benefits and flexible hours to boost fairness.

Looks like recent pay disparity complaints are met with half measures. A 30% hike feels arbitrary without clear funding sources.

Are they sure striking over this proposal won't backfire? Negotiations might yield more than outright rejection at this point.

Union leaders should set clear benchmarks and timelines before any walkout. That way both sides can track progress objectively.
