Nigeria Unveils PEECH Programme to Train 44,000 Community Health Workers

Nigeria Unveils PEECH Programme to Train 44,000 Community Health Workers — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Programme for Equitable Expansion of Community-Based Health Workers (PEECH) will run from February 2026 to July 2028. It aims to train and upskill 44,000 community health workers across 17 states and the FCT. PEECH will strengthen local institutions through improved training, supervision, mentoring, data management and governance. It also plans to support health training schools and local government health authorities to better manage community-based staff. Aligned with a long-term plan, PEECH seeks to create 600,000 paid CHW jobs for young Nigerians, expand services to 50 million people, maintain a 90% retention rate and help 40% of workers move into higher education or formal health roles within five years. Anambra’s Commissioner for Health welcomes the project and highlights plans to digitize primary healthcare for better monitoring, efficiency and evidence-based decision-making.

It's impressive on paper, but coordinating training across 17 states and the FCT sounds like a massive logistical challenge.

I'm not convinced adding more workers alone will fix access issues without addressing infrastructure and equipment gaps.

State health boards should set up mentorship networks linking new trainees with experienced practitioners for smoother integration and ongoing skill development.
