NIWA Warns: Overloaded Barges Threaten Safety on Lagos Waterways
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has raised alarm over the growing practice of loading barges beyond approved cargo limits. Engr Sarat Braimah warned at the 2026 Dockworkers’ Day in Lagos that stacking containers too high or unevenly blocks tugboat captains’ forward view and raises the risk of collisions with other vessels, sandbanks, or small passenger boats. Represented by Engr Kelvin Abba, NIWA said it has tightened oversight at all loading points. Operators must keep container stacks within permissible heights to preserve clear visibility from the wheelhouse. The authority is also tackling the misuse of safety equipment and the dangers posed by marine litter across inland waterways. NIWA reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing safety regulations and promoting responsible barge operations. By ensuring compliance, the agency aims to reduce accidents, protect lives and property, and preserve the aquatic environment.
