Foundation Hails Ernest Ikoli as Crusader of Truth and Champion of Independence
Chief Ernest Ikoli was a pioneering journalist, reformer and nationalist who fought colonial oppression. He served as assistant editor of Lagos Weekly Record, founding editor of the Daily Times and publisher of the African Messenger. The Ernest Sisei Ikoli Foundation praised his role in ending external rule, mentoring generations of journalists, teachers and politicians. Ikoli helped establish the People’s Union, Nigeria Youth Movement and the Universal Negro Improvement Association. He championed a united Nigeria and Pan-African solidarity. Known for his courage, moderation and devotion to representative democracy, he inspired colleagues from Herbert Macaulay to Obafemi Awolowo in the struggle for independence. Born in Nembe in 1893, he died in 1960 after a life dedicated to political reform, education and social justice. His legacy endures in Nigeria’s free press and democratic ideals.
