Flood Crisis Devastates Ifelodun CDA Communities, Residents Urge Lagos Govt Action
Residents of Abaranje and nearby settlements under the Ifeoluwa Community Development Association (CDA) in Alimosho LGA have called on the Lagos State Government and Ministry of the Environment to intervene after heavy rains triggered severe flooding. At the centre of the crisis is the 6.4-kilometre Potokun Canal. Years of poor maintenance and blocked sections have reduced its drainage capacity. Homes have been destroyed, families displaced, and property losses run into billions of naira. Community leaders described harrowing escape efforts. Some parents placed children inside freezers to float above rising waters. Others hid children in ceiling spaces after floodwaters rose above window level. Residents demand immediate dredging with swamp buggies at key bottlenecks. They also want a permanent excavator stationed along the canal, routine maintenance by the local council, and the completion of pending drainage projects to prevent future disasters.
