Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for £11m Over Unauthorized Use of Her Image on TV Boxes

Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for £11m Over Unauthorized Use of Her Image on TV Boxes — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Pop star Dua Lipa is suing Samsung for £11m in damages after the company allegedly used her image on TV boxes without permission. According to court papers filed in California, Samsung featured her backstage photo from a 2024 music festival on the packaging of its Crystal 43-inch UHD TVs to promote the XITE Hits channel. Lipa’s lawyers say the unauthorised use gave the impression she endorsed the product and drove some fans to buy the TVs. They claim the tech giant ignored multiple legal warnings before the case was filed. Social media reactions included comments from fans who said they bought the TVs because of her image. The singer, who partners with brands like Nespresso, Puma and Porsche, is seeking at least $15m in damages. Samsung has not yet issued a public response to the lawsuit.

Do you think Samsung's use of Dua Lipa's backstage photo without permission crosses a clear legal line or is this just standard marketing risk?

Samsung packaging often features celebrity images, but it seems unusual they'd omit any licensing agreement for such a high-profile star.

Companies should always secure explicit photo usage rights before production to avoid costly lawsuits and maintain trust with the artists involved.
