Ugandan Pastor Killed After Interfaith Debate; Imam Named as Suspect
A 25-year-old pastor, Bernard Mulongo, was killed in eastern Uganda after taking part in an interfaith debate in Mbale, reports say. He was returning from a radio programme with a companion when men on motorcycles allegedly stopped them near Jami village. His companion said the attackers accused Mulongo of persuading Muslims to convert to Christianity before seizing him. He fled and alerted police, while the pastor was later found dead with injuries to his head, hand, chest and back. An imam who reportedly argued with Mulongo after two Muslim women converted during the debate has been named as a suspect and is said to be on the run. Police have opened an investigation, while the pastor's family is demanding that those responsible be prosecuted. Mulongo is survived by his wife and two children. Uganda's laws guarantee religious freedom, including the right to change or propagate one's faith.
