Lawyer: FG Must Amend NYSC Act Before Implementing Proposed Reforms
A public policy analyst has warned that the Federal Government cannot introduce sweeping changes to the National Youth Service Corps without first amending the Act that created it and securing National Assembly approval. He explained that administrative tweaks alone cannot override statutory provisions such as the requirement for the Director-General to be a serving military officer. Any clause in the NYSC Act must be changed through the legislative process. The analyst urged broad consultations with universities, corps members and youth organisations to build consensus. He argued that involving those directly affected would strengthen trust and public acceptance. On calls to use indigenous Adire fabric in the NYSC uniform, he said the focus should be on boosting local manufacturing and job creation rather than on ethnic considerations.
