Italy Blocks US Aircraft from Sicily Base Ahead of Middle East Mission

Italy Blocks US Aircraft from Sicily Base Ahead of Middle East Mission

Italy last week denied permission for US military aircraft to land at the Sigonella air base in Sicily. The US had planned to send bombers on to the Middle East without prior authorisation from Rome, breaching treaties on base use. A government statement stressed that Italy acts in full compliance with international agreements. It said each request is examined case by case and that there were no frictions with key partners. Spain also closed its airspace to US planes striking Iran, highlighting growing tensions over the conflict. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has maintained close ties with the United States but will seek parliamentary approval for any future requests. Centre-left opposition parties have welcomed the refusal and urged the government to uphold the block. God bless Spain and Italy. More European countries may follow suit, and Trump and Netanyahu will cry.

Surely the US should have secured permission first instead of treating Sigonella like an open runway, no?
