Recognising Genuine Igbo Attires and Avoiding Cultural Misappropriation
Many people confuse the traditional Igbo attire for men with the Niger Delta robe. An Igbo garment typically stops at the knee and features short or long sleeves, not a flowing gown. Obiwaka is a strictly Igbo waist wrapper woven as a matching pair with intentional variations in length and width. In contrast, Oloku is a single piece of cloth without pleats or side extensions. Ichafu and gele are also distinct. Igbo ichafu is made from damask, while the Yoruba gele uses a different woven fabric. Understanding these differences helps preserve each culture’s heritage.
