1 / 3

His Eminence Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Daniel Etuk, President General of the Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, has mourned the passing of His Majesty King (Dr.) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V of Opobo Kingdom. Delivering the keynote at the funeral service in Opobo Town, the Patriarch of Ibibios described the late king as an enigma, a bridge-builder and a champion of unity. He praised King Jaja’s dedication to cultural heritage, education, youth empowerment and healthcare. Etuk extended condolences to the Jaja family, the Opobo Kingdom, the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council and the Rivers State Government. He also prayed for wisdom and strength for the new King-elect, Alabo Charles Mac-Pepple Jaja (Jeki VI), as he assumes the throne. Born on April 28, 1942, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja passed away at 83. His funeral service was held on Saturday at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Opobo Town, Rivers State.

What significance does the Supreme Monarch's tribute hold for the Opobo Kingdom and wider Akwa Ibom community today?

You dey wonder if this tribute really changes anything for the Opobo folks, or just formality?

I appreciate its symbolism, but saying it fully shapes modern Opobo life seems a stretch.

It's notable that a state council president general presided over the tribute, raising questions about traditional hierarchy blending with modern governance.

I get the respect shown, yet calling him Jeki V seems to focus too much on titles rather than his personal legacy.

Perhaps the council could share more details on how they'll preserve King Jaja's cultural contributions for future generations.
