Why Bola Tinubu Isn’t Listed Among NADECO Activists

Why Bola Tinubu Isn’t Listed Among NADECO Activists — 1 of 3
1 / 3

In this post, I highlight the official members of NADECO, the coalition of pro-democracy activists who opposed military rule in the 1990s. Notice that Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name is missing. He wasn’t part of the movement. While many risked arrest and worse under General Abacha, he remained close to the regime. Here is the full list of NADECO members: Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, Mallam Lawal Dambazzau, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Major General Adeyinka Adebayo (retd.), Chief Bola Ige, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Professor Anya O. Anya, Colonel Yohanna Madaki, Reverend Father Moses Adasu, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, Reverend Tunji Adebiyi, Chief Ade Ojo, Chief Ralph Obioha, Chief Empire Kanu, Chief Michael Anyiam, Dr. Sola Soile, Vice Admiral Akin Aduwo, Chief E. Duru, Mr. Nick Dazzang, Mr. Labaran Maku, Dr. A. A. Akingba, Mr. Babas Eko Oyekanmi, Mr. Alex Ayatolla, Mrs. Sarah Jubril, Alhaji Ganiyu Dawodu, Mr. O. P. Edodo, Mr. A. Barber, Otunba Olabiyi Durojaiye, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Alhaji Mohammed Siraj Hamza, Dr. Wahab Dosunmu, Otunba Aboyade Cole, Major General Olufemi Olutoye (retd.), Chief Sobo Sowemimo, Dr. Steve Achema, Chief Olaniwun Ajayi, Chief Olu Falae, Brigadier-General Jonah Jang, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Mr. Alao Aka-Bashorun, Mr. Emmanuel Njiwah, Chief Vincent Nwizugbo, Dr. Uma Eleazu

What factors might explain why Bola Tinubu isn't listed among those NADECO activists who opposed military rule?

Could it be that his political roles then didn't align with NADECO's activities or focus?

I see where you're coming from, but perhaps NADECO's focus was on different activities than what Tinubu did.

It's interesting that the official roster highlights activists facing Abacha's repression, yet omits any mention of Tinubu's involvement.

I get the list omits Tinubu, but isn't it possible he contributed quietly without formal membership?

For clarity, anyone researching NADECO should cross-reference multiple sources before drawing conclusions about individual roles.
