Gakpo Double Fuels Netherlands’ 5-1 World Cup Rout of Sweden

Gakpo Double Fuels Netherlands’ 5-1 World Cup Rout of Sweden

The Netherlands stamped their credentials as title contenders with a commanding 5-1 win over Sweden in their second World Cup match. Brian Brobbey struck twice inside 17 minutes after early service from Cody Gakpo, giving Ronald Koeman’s side an immediate edge. Goalie Bart Verbruggen kept the Swedes at bay with several key saves, while VAR ruled out a Gustav Lagerbielke effort on the stroke of halftime. Netherlands extended their lead after the break as Gakpo added a quickfire brace. Sweden briefly halved the deficit through Anthony Elanga but could not stem the Dutch tide. A late Crysencio Summerville goal, set up by Memphis Depay, completed the emphatic victory for Oranje.

Brobbey's quickfire brace was eye-catching, but Koeman's midfield still looked vulnerable under sustained pressure.

I'm not convinced this result means the Netherlands are unbeatable though, every team has an off day or two.

They should shore up that midfield link-up before the next match; a stronger control there will prevent any slips against top sides.
