Centurion-In-Waiting: Iwobi Reflects on Journey Ahead of 100th Super Eagles Cap

Centurion-In-Waiting: Iwobi Reflects on Journey Ahead of 100th Super Eagles Cap

Alexander Iwobi has thanked Nigerians at home and abroad for their support as he prepares for his 100th appearance in green-and-white. He credits the coach who first called him up and says he has no regrets choosing Nigeria despite representing England at youth level. Since his debut against DR Congo in Belgium in October 2015, Iwobi has grown into a quiet playmaker. He recalls the pride of scoring the goal that sealed Nigeria’s place at the 2018 World Cup, with his parents watching from the stands in Uyo. Looking ahead to the friendly with Portugal in Leiria, he says he still sees himself simply as a Super Eagles player. On a lighter note, he jokes about aiming for another 100 caps and hopes to win the AFCON and feature at the next World Cup. His father, a former footballer, says the whole family is proud of Alex’s dedication and achievements for Nigeria.

What do you think has driven Iwobi's commitment to Nigeria over a decade of service to the Super Eagles?

Is it safe to say his decade-long service stems solely from patriotism, or might other factors be at play?

Interesting that Iwobi credits his first coach so strongly, yet we rarely see that level of loyalty in modern football.

I'm not convinced choosing Nigeria over England was purely emotional; career prospects and playing time likely influenced his decision more.

Young players should balance national pride with career planning, ensuring they choose pathways offering both growth and visibility.
