My Suspicion Confirmed: Why Nigerian Teachers Face More Rejections Abroad
I recently learned the reason behind the high rejection rates for my teaching applications abroad. Despite holding two first-class degrees and a valid teaching licence, I was turned down while someone with fewer qualifications and the same licence secured multiple offers. The recruiting organization explained that strict government-imposed visa and immigration policies often favour applicants based on passport country. For example, some countries require specific licences or approvals that many Nigerian teachers cannot easily obtain. They stressed these barriers come from foreign government rules, not the recruiters, but they still make it much harder for qualified and motivated Nigerian teachers to succeed.
