Lagos NYSC Camp Overrun: Corps Members Sleep in Corridors, Some Sent Home
The NYSC Orientation Camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, is grappling with severe overcrowding after 3,900 members of the 2026 Batch A stream arrived on April 24. Many are sleeping in corridors, entrances and cramped hostel rooms due to bed shortages and poor ventilation. Some corps members accuse camp management of admitting more participants than the facility can handle to secure extra allocations. Officials added extra bunk beds, but congestion remains extreme, with reports that some trainees were sent home over lack of space, poor feeding and long registration queues. The NYSC Lagos State Coordinator acknowledged the strain, attributing it to ongoing renovations and appealing for patience. She announced plans for a new 16,000-capacity camp in Agbowa, Ikorodu, by the end of 2026. Many corps members remain skeptical and are calling for urgent intervention to prevent conditions from worsening.
