Chaos at Abuja Federal High Court as AAC Secretary Clashes with DSS Over Blocked Lawyer

Chaos at Abuja Federal High Court as AAC Secretary Clashes with DSS Over Blocked Lawyer

A tense standoff unfolded outside the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. DSS operatives blocked key members of Omoyele Sowore’s legal team and his associates from entering the courtroom. African Action Congress National Secretary Oshiok Philip confronted the officers, accusing them of violating the Constitution by restricting access to a public court. The incident came just before a session in Sowore’s cybercrime trial. Sowore, the AAC’s former presidential candidate, is on trial over social media posts allegedly insulting President Tinubu. On June 16, Justice Umar revoked his bail and issued a bench warrant after he missed a hearing. His lawyers have filed to stay the remand order and asked the judge to recuse himself for alleged bias. Today’s hearing will address that application.

It seems odd that security agents would prevent legal representation without clear explanation to the public.

Do we know what justification the security agents provided for blocking the lawyer from court?

Blocking lawyers might backfire and only draw more attention to AAC's cause rather than quelling dissent.

Courts should ensure transparent procedures for lawyer access, so disputes stay focused on legal arguments not forced confrontations.
