Lagos Markets Feel the Pinch as Petrol Hike Sends Food Costs Soaring
In March 2026, Lagos food prices surged after petrol rose from N875 to N960 per litre. Higher fuel costs pushed transport and logistics bills sharply upward. A survey by The Business Bureau of Mushin, Daleko, Mile 12 and Oyingbo markets found 43 of 68 tracked items more expensive than in February. Pepper led with jumps over 140%, beans climbed up to 70%, and fish prices rose by as much as 70%. Only a handful of goods, such as wheat flour and rice, saw modest price drops. Analysts say rising fuel-driven transport charges are the key driver behind renewed food inflation in Lagos. Future movements in food costs will depend on fuel price stability, supply chain efficiency and seasonal agricultural output. Without relief, households may face further pressure on their budgets.
