Wike Cracks Down on Jabi Lake Shanties, Warns Speculative Landowners
The FCT Minister has ordered the removal of abandoned shanties around Jabi Lake, calling the makeshift structures an eyesore unbefitting Nigeria’s capital. He dismissed recent appeals to “leave Jabi Lake for Nigerians,” stressing that decisions follow the Abuja master plan and existing laws. Plots allocated for high-end development have lain idle for 15 years, he noted, prompting land revocations and reassignment to serious investors. The minister clarified that the move isn’t about denying public access but about reclaiming land from speculators and enforcing proper use. He warned that failure to develop within a set timeframe will see plots return to government hands. He also decried unauthorised conversions of recreational land into worship centres and vowed stricter compliance measures to align Jabi Lake’s surroundings with global standards.
