Enugu Suspends Daily Market Toll Collection, Police Arraign Two for Illegal Revenue Collection

Enugu Suspends Daily Market Toll Collection, Police Arraign Two for Illegal Revenue Collection

Governor Peter Mbah has ordered an immediate and indefinite suspension of daily tolls for traders without lockup shops. He made the announcement at a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service. A taskforce chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, will enforce the directive. Anyone caught collecting the N100 or N200 daily toll illegally risks legal action under the new tax laws designed to support the poor. Traders with lockup shops remain unaffected and continue to pay annual fees of N30,000 or N36,000. The governor urged local government chairmen, traditional rulers, market leaders and civil society groups to report any violations. Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command arraigned Christopher Ifeanyi (65) and Chinenye Ugwu before the Enugu North Magistrate Court. They face charges of stealing N700,000 from the state government and forging local government receipts for native doctor registrations. They pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned to May 8.
