NCDC Warns Lagos and Abuja Residents Against Bush Meat as Ebola Spreads in Central Africa
Nigerian doctors and the NCDC have cautioned residents in Lagos and Abuja to stop hunting, handling, or eating bush meat. Bats and primates sold in local markets are known carriers of Ebola and pose a serious infection risk. The latest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine. Armed conflict and displacement in eastern DRC have allowed the virus to spread across borders. Nigeria recalls the 2014 Lagos outbreak and has activated surveillance at all entry points. Citizens are urged to wash hands regularly, avoid contact with sick people’s bodily fluids, and report any unusual symptoms immediately.
