Protesters in Durban Seize Five Suspected Drug Dealers in Flats Raid

Anti-immigration protesters in Durban say they arrested five suspected drug traffickers during a vigilante raid on flats in the Point area. The march was led by activist Ngizwe Mchunu alongside other organisers. They acted on tips that the building was overrun by dealers believed to be Nigerian. A small team entered with police and emerged with drugs and one detainee who then pointed them to another block. The two-hour operation saw protesters guard the site outside while officers searched for more evidence. Organisers allege the flats also serve as hubs for human trafficking and accuse some police of collusion. The rally concluded at Gugu Dlamini Park, where leaders vowed to continue their campaign against drug dealers and illegal immigrants. They also criticised political parties they say protect migrants at the expense of residents’ safety.

I get the frustration, but taking justice into your own hands always feels risky and unsettling.

Do we know whether the police were involved or informed before the protesters carried out that raid?

I agree that their action reflects deep frustration with slow official response to drug trafficking.

It's surprising how easily protesters claimed they had reliable tips before raiding those flats and detaining five suspects.

Authorities need clear protocols for citizen tip-offs and must oversee any raids to ensure suspects face formal legal proceedings instead of street justice.
