Sixty Years On: Aguiyi-Ironsi Family Honors Lt-Col Adekunle Fajuyi’s Ultimate Sacrifice
Nigeria’s first military head of state family has issued a remembrance message on the 60th anniversary of Lt-Col Adekunle Fajuyi’s death. The letter, signed by Amb. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, praises Fajuyi as a war hero who laid down his life for national unity. The family recalls that Fajuyi, then Military Governor of the Western Region, could have saved himself but chose to stay with Maj-Gen Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi during the July 1966 counter-coup in Ibadan. His loyalty and selflessness remain powerful symbols of patriotism. Describing him as a national martyr, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family urges government bodies and custodians of history to preserve Fajuyi’s memory and support his descendants. They also thank Nigerians and institutions who continue to honor his legacy of unity, courage and service.
