Oshiomhole Urges Tougher Action Against Armed Criminals, Cites Insecurity as Tinubu’s Key Risk

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has criticised the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, over the police leadership’s clarification that it did not issue a shoot-on-sight directive. He argued that armed criminals should be confronted decisively by security operatives. The Nigeria Police Force said the IGP was referring to Force Order 237, which sets out the legal and operational rules governing when officers may use firearms. According to the police, officers were briefed on the established rules of engagement. Oshiomhole also praised the DSS for appealing a ruling that imposed life sentences on some convicted offenders instead of death penalties. He identified insecurity as the biggest political risk to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election prospects and urged the President to set measurable targets for service chiefs.

Authorities should communicate operational guidelines plainly, equip officers properly, and regularly explain how they are addressing armed criminal threats.
