Can Sugar Beet Help Nigeria Reduce Its Dependence on Imported Sugar?

Nigeria relies heavily on imported sugar despite strong local demand. I believe sugar beet deserves serious evaluation as an additional domestic source of sucrose, alongside sugarcane. Sugar beet can mature faster than sugarcane and may be suitable for parts of the northern Guinea savannah. However, its commercial potential in Nigeria will depend on verified field trials, suitable seed varieties, irrigation, farmer support, and processing facilities close to production areas. If the crop proves viable at scale, modular processing hubs could support sugar production, ethanol, molasses and new agricultural jobs. Investors, engineers, farmers and policymakers should examine the economics and infrastructure needed to make this a competitive local industry.
