Etche’s Sand Dredging Sector Paralyzed: Who Will Speak for the People?

This open letter appeals to civil society groups, human rights defenders, and the general public to demand accountability from Mr. Okechukwu Onyeche over alleged financial misconduct and abuse of office in Etche’s sand dredging sector. The sand dredging industry in Etche is a multi-billion naira ecosystem. It sustains tipper operations, heavy-duty equipment investments, formal and informal employment, and dozens of ancillary businesses across Egwi, Umuanyagu/Okoroagu, Chokocho, Umuechem, and Igbo communities. The March 9 suspension of dredging by the council chairman halted all activity. Equipment now lies idle under bank loans, hundreds of families have lost livelihoods, and local commerce has been disrupted. Allegations include diversion of funds, unexplained leadership changes, illegal levies on operators, and intimidation by security personnel. We call on the EFCC, ICPC, and Nigeria Police Force to launch a forensic audit and investigate all parties involved without delay.

Agree. Organizing town hall meetings, gathering signatures, and inviting journalists can create pressure on officials over the dredging concerns.

It's interesting how this letter names Mr. Onyeche directly but offers no detailed evidence of the alleged financial misconduct.

I'm not convinced civil society alone can shift power dynamics if no formal investigation follows these claims.

Organizing town hall meetings and inviting regulatory agencies might help gather community evidence and boost pressure on Etche officials.
