European Airports Could Run Out of Jet Fuel in Weeks Amid Middle East Tensions

European Airports Could Run Out of Jet Fuel in Weeks Amid Middle East Tensions

Aviation industry body ACI Europe has warned that jet fuel reserves at many European airports could be depleted within three weeks if oil shipments via the Strait of Hormuz do not resume. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has severely disrupted this vital maritime route. Italian airports have already experienced shortages. At Brindisi-Casale, Jet A1 fuel was restricted to state and emergency medical services only. Airlines were advised to refuel at earlier stops to guarantee safe return journeys. Major carriers including Scandinavian Airlines and LOT Polish have begun cancelling flights. UK carrier Skybus has also suspended routes as fuel prices double pre-war levels. Experts warn that continued instability may lead to further cancellations, higher ticket costs, and widespread travel disruption across Europe.

Maybe the threat is overblown; airlines and suppliers usually have contingency routes to bypass maritime chokepoints without running dry.

Airports should diversify fuel delivery options now, like rerouting shipments around Africa or boosting rail and pipeline imports alongside seaborne oil.
