OPEP Troops Arrest Ex-Inspector, Recover Weapons Cache in Riyom, Plateau
According to an operational report made available to NAN, troops of Operation Enduring Peace intercepted a suspected arms dealer at the Makera checkpoint in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The operation followed credible intelligence on a white Peugeot conveying illegal weapons from Jos South. At about 2:30 p.m., soldiers stopped the vehicle and recovered two locally fabricated pistols, 167 rounds of 9mm ammunition, three cans of pepper spray and a jack knife. Further searches uncovered two mobile phones, two cutlasses, a police staff identity tag, three photographs of the suspect in uniform, two ATM cards, a National Identity Number card and ₦73,300 in cash. Investigators say the suspect is a dismissed police inspector and is now in the custody of Operation Safe Haven. Authorities have launched inquiries to trace the intended destination of the weapons and any criminal network links. The arrest is part of ongoing security efforts to curb illegal arms proliferation across Plateau and neighbouring states.
