Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, died at 68 on Saturday at his home in Ilorin. He passed away around 3 a.m., hours after attending the Isha’i prayer and with no known prior illness. Born in Ilorin on November 29, 1957, he earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981, and later a Master’s and PhD from the University of Liverpool. Ambali began teaching at the University of Maiduguri before returning to Ilorin. He served as pioneer Dean of Veterinary Medicine and as VC from 2012 to 2017. At his death, he was Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of Kwara State University. He authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and was honoured as a Commander of the Order of the Niger. His Janazah is set for 4 p.m. at his residence along Air Force Road, Ilorin. The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union called his passing a great loss to the emirate and the nation.

It's surprising there was no known prior illness mentioned before his sudden death at home early Saturday morning after Isha'i prayers.

While he served UNILORIN for many years, we shouldn't assume every past vice-chancellor role automatically led to lasting positive change.

Perhaps the university can honor his legacy by establishing a scholarship or health awareness initiative in his name for future students.
