Tanzanian President Cuts Convoy, Sends Officials on Single Bus to Save Fuel

Tanzanian President Cuts Convoy, Sends Officials on Single Bus to Save Fuel

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reduced her official motorcade and directed government officials to travel together by bus during official trips. She announced the change at a swearing-in ceremony on April 8, citing rising fuel shortages linked to the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran. The smaller convoy will include only her core escort, police and a backup vehicle. Hassan’s entourage previously had more than 30 vehicles. She said consolidating travel into one bus will help lower fuel use as global supplies tighten amid the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Do you think downsizing official convoys alone can shift opinions on wider government spending habits?

It's surprising that a head of state resorts to cutting convoys amid fuel shortages caused by an overseas conflict rather than boosting local production.

I'm not convinced this gesture amounts to real savings when the real issue is supply chain and refining capacity, not just fuel use.

Maybe Nigeria can learn from this by scheduling joint official trips and investing in more efficient public transport to cut fuel costs.
