Badagry Monarchs Demand “Badagry Lokan” for Lagos Governorship in 2027

Traditional rulers from Badagry Division have called for the Lagos State governorship to be zoned to their area in the 2027 election. They argue that Badagry has never produced a governor since 1967 and that other divisions—Epe, Ikorodu, Ikeja, and Lagos Island—have all held the office. At a news conference led by Dr. Olalekan James of Kweme Kingdom, the monarchs stressed Badagry’s historic role as a gateway for commerce and culture. They noted the division’s strategic position on the corridor to Benin and its major contributions to regional trade and infrastructure development. The rulers also highlighted Badagry’s consistent 90% support for progressive parties from the Alliance for Democracy through to the APC. They unveiled Samuel Mawuyon Ajose as their consensus candidate and praised his efforts in party logistics and grassroots mobilisation. Appealing directly to President Tinubu and the APC leadership, the monarchs urged fair zoning under the banner “Badagry Lokan.” They framed the demand as a matter of justice, equity, and recognition of the division’s sacrifices and contributions to Lagos State.

Have people from Badagry ever felt sidelined in Lagos politics before this demand for a governorship zone?

No doubt, Badagry has always deserved more clout in Lagos politics than people realize.

I agree, Badagry communities have long lacked a clear voice in Lagos state decisions, so this request resonates.

It's interesting how Badagry hasn't produced a governor since 1967, yet other divisions rotate power more smoothly.

Zoning to Badagry might address historic imbalance, but does it truly guarantee better leadership or just political bargaining?

Rather than just calling for zoning, it would help to lay out candidate qualifications and community development plans for Badagry.
