INEC Ramps Up Grassroots Drive to Curb Voter Apathy Ahead of Osun 2026 Poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission is intensifying preparations for the 15 August 2026 Osun governorship election amid concerns over low voter turnout. Its Voter Education and Publicity unit joined forces with the Gender and Inclusivity department in Osogbo to refine outreach strategies and address gaps in civic engagement. Osun’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola, stressed that election planning is an ongoing civic duty. She warned that misinformation, declining trust, and limited access to reliable electoral information risk undermining participation. To counter this, INEC officers will take voter awareness campaigns into marketplaces, transport hubs, schools, religious centres, and other community gathering points. Inclusivity remains central to the strategy. Babalola urged targeted sensitisation for women, youth, seniors, and persons with disabilities. She also called on traditional and religious leaders to partner in boosting turnout, particularly in areas with historically low participation. INEC says these measures aim to strengthen public confidence and ensure every eligible voter knows why, when, and how to cast their ballot.
