Lagos Tops Africa’s Traffic Ranking with 68-Minute Average Commute
Lagos has been named the most congested city in Africa in a 2026 report, posting a Traffic Index of 348.5 and an average one-way commute of about 68 minutes per day. Rapid population growth, booming commercial activity and limited transport infrastructure are putting extreme pressure on the city’s road networks. Many commuters lose significant hours in gridlock before even arriving at work. The latest data from the Numbeo Traffic Index also ranks Nairobi second with a 53.7-minute commute, followed by Cairo, Pretoria and Johannesburg among the top ten worst-congested cities.
