Stakeholders Criticize INEC After Low Turnout in Rivers South Senatorial Bye-Election

Stakeholders Criticize INEC After Low Turnout in Rivers South Senatorial Bye-Election

Youth leader Justice Ori says the poor conduct and logistical failures during last Saturday’s Rivers South East senatorial bye-election deepen concerns ahead of 2027. He urges INEC to address technical glitches and voter apathy, and to ensure free and fair polls without making flimsy excuses. Social commentator Obinna Akanwa joins calls for improvement in election planning. Professor Ken Nweke highlights that technology alone cannot guarantee credible elections; weak institutions and human factors remain critical challenges. He warns that without trust in INEC, voter participation will continue to decline. Peace advocate Obinna Egbogidi notes that fewer than 100,000 of the 800,000 registered voters cast ballots, signaling a crisis of confidence. Public affairs analyst Ijeoma Obi adds that INEC must rebuild trust by demonstrating that every vote will count in future elections.

I'm not convinced voter apathy is the main issue here; logistical failures might be overblown to shift blame away from political actors.

INEC should prioritize reliable equipment checks and community outreach programs to rebuild trust and encourage full participation in future elections.
