Unmasking “World Vape Day”: The Big Tobacco Scam Ahead of World No Tobacco Day 2026

World No Tobacco Day highlights the health, economic and environmental toll of tobacco use. Big Tobacco now pushes a rival campaign called “World Vape Day,” but it has no backing from the WHO or any credible health body. This marketing ploy portrays e-cigarettes and heated tobacco as safe “harm reduction” products. Evidence from Brazil’s health regulator shows none of these devices meet safety standards. Instead, they pose significant risks, especially to young people. Globally, over 100 million people vape today, including 15 million adolescents. WHO data reveal children are nearly nine times more likely than adults to pick up vaping. In Nigeria, loopholes in tobacco laws have allowed more than 570 new nicotine products onto the market. Many are flavoured and packaged to attract youth. Recent investigations even found vendors selling these products to schoolchildren in uniform. Meanwhile, the federal and several state governments are suing British American Tobacco for alleged negligence and fraud, seeking over ₦10 trillion in damages. The theme for WNTD 2026—“Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction”—could not be more timely. Behind flashy ads and celebrity endorsements, Big Tobacco aims to recruit new customers and sustain addiction. The public must see through the “World Vape Day” hoax and reject it.
