Subsidy Removal and Naira Float Leave Nigerians Struggling

Since the new administration removed fuel subsidy and let the naira float on its first day, ordinary Nigerians have faced severe hardship. Petrol prices spiked and the cost of goods and services soared. Many who owned cars either sold them or can no longer afford fuel. They now trek long distances or pay high fares for public transport. Inflation has pushed the rich into the middle class, the middle class into poverty, and the poorest into a deeper crisis. Yet government borrowing continues without relief for citizens. This economic strain is unprecedented. Nigeria needs urgent action to restore hope and improve living standards. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It's surprising how quickly petrol prices shot up after the float, but I'm not convinced the subsidy removal was handled transparently by this administration.

Calling subsidy removal the sole reason for hardship overlooks deeper policy failures and corruption that have plagued our economy for decades.

To ease impact, communities could organize pooled transport schemes and bulk fuel purchases while advocating for targeted relief measures in local councils.
