Court Chaos: Maureen Badejo’s Trial Adjourned After Hours of Delay
Proceedings at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi ground to a halt after successive postponements left lawyers and observers waiting from 9:00 a.m. until late afternoon. Despite being called to sit at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., the judge never appeared. Court officials eventually invited both parties to set a new date. The defence and prosecution agreed to reconvene on June 23, 2026, leaving many frustrated after travelling in vain. One source described the day as “a complete waste of time.” Badejo, a UK-based blogger charged with cyberstalking and defamation, was earlier granted bail on stringent conditions. She faces allegations of publishing false claims against a prominent cleric in violation of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act. Civil society groups have criticised the prosecution as an attempt to stifle free expression.
