Rooting Nigeria’s Health: Tinubu’s Bold Investment in Primary Care

Nigeria’s health system needs a strong foundation. President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Health Agenda invests in primary health care—the entry point for most Nigerians. The administration released N68 billion to procure up to 35 million doses of measles-rubella, polio and HPV vaccines. Targeted campaigns will reach 7.4 million “zero-dose” children through house-to-house teams and community outreach. Over 4,000 primary health centres have been upgraded with reliable power, water, medicines and 24-hour services. More than 60,000 frontline health workers have been trained, with plans to double that number. A health fellow in each local government now tracks facility performance and funding. This transparency ensures that investments translate into real results. Strong primary care is the key to saving millions of lives in Nigeria.

Bold claim, but I suspect N68 billion won't stretch far past city clinics.

Investing in measles, polio and HPV doses looks promising, but sustaining clinics and staff training remains a challenge often overlooked.

Deploying vaccines is great, yet we shouldn't ignore the need for reliable funding to ensure immunisation campaigns don't stall midstream.

Local health centres should partner with community leaders for vaccine awareness drives and maintain transparent follow-up schedules to build trust.
