GMI Warns of Fake News Threatening Nigeria’s Security
The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative has raised alarm over a surge of fake news and disinformation that threaten national security and social cohesion. It says malicious actors use advanced tools like AI to forge documents, clone voices, and produce deepfake videos that sow fear and instability across communities. The group pointed to false military casualty figures, doctored operation videos, and misleading narratives that undermine troop morale and embolden insurgents. It also warned that engineered rumors can spark ethnic or religious violence and erode public trust in authorities. GMI urged every citizen to confirm news with credible media before sharing. It called on security agencies to enforce cybercrime laws and on social media platforms to swiftly remove harmful content, especially in local languages. The organisation stressed that a united Nigeria is safer than one divided by digital lies.
