Unreliable Power Costs Nigeria Over ₦40 Trillion Annually – NISO Report
According to the Nigerian Independent System Operator, poor electricity supply costs Nigeria over ₦40 trillion every year. Unreliable power remains one of the biggest constraints on growth, industrial output, and job creation. The operator notes that Nigeria generates 45–50 GW of electricity daily but can only transmit about 5 GW to consumers. Transmission, distribution, and gas supply bottlenecks force businesses and households to rely on costly self-generation. NISO calls for urgent reforms: digitalise the grid, strengthen infrastructure, diversify energy sources, and enforce the national grid code. It highlights recent wins, including 82 new transformers, expanded wheeling capacity, and over a year without a grid collapse. Experts warn that without tackling poor governance, corruption, and unsustainable subsidies, the sector will keep bleeding funds. They urge holistic reforms, tariff adjustments, and streamlined institutions to restore reliable power and unlock Nigeria’s economic potential.
