Honouring Civil War Victims: A Call for Justice, Inclusion and Human Rights
Today we remember those who lost their lives in the Nigerian Civil War and the years of hardship that followed. We honour the memory of countless men, women and children whose suffering marks a solemn chapter in our history. As a lawyer, I believe remembrance must go beyond symbolism. It must renew our collective commitment to protecting human rights, the sanctity of life and the rule of law. The tragedy of that era underscores the consequences of exclusion, injustice and the failure to uphold fundamental rights. Every community deserves dignity, equal protection and meaningful participation in governance. These are not privileges but constitutional and human rights principles that underlie any democratic society. Where grievances exist, they must be addressed through lawful dialogue, institutional reform and genuine justice. Honouring the fallen means standing against unlawful violence, discrimination and repression. It means advocating for accountability, fairness and inclusive policies that respect our diverse nation. May the lessons of the past guide us toward a more equitable, peaceful future.
