Adire NYSC Uniforms and Anthem Change: Nigeria’s Misplaced Priorities
I see that under President Tinubu, the government shifts attention from its failures to symbolic battles and non-issues. Debates over the national anthem and NYSC uniform steal headlines. Just this month, the minister of youth development proposed replacing the NYSC khaki uniform with local adire fabric. This aims to boost Nigerian textile production. But Nigerians face high inflation, unemployment, insecurity and soaring food prices. This issue echoes the recent reinstatement of the 1960 national anthem. Supporters praised the move as a return to national values. Critics saw it as another misplaced priority when citizens crave practical solutions. Meaningful NYSC reform should focus on security, welfare and skills training. We need policies that feed families, protect corps members and create jobs. Symbolism cannot substitute for performance.
