ACP Sadiq Mana Visits Ilisan Remo to Address Police Extortion and Strengthen Community Trust

ACP Sadiq Mana Visits Ilisan Remo to Address Police Extortion and Strengthen Community Trust — 1 of 4
1 / 4

The newly appointed Ikenne Area Commander, ACP Sadiq Mana, paid a courtesy visit to Ilisan Remo. He met with community leaders and youth representatives to discuss pressing security issues. Youth leaders, led by Chairman Alhaji Usman Simisaye, raised concerns about alleged police extortion on motorcycle operators. They noted that these practices have driven up fares and led to accidents as riders try to evade unlawful collections. The youth pledged to support the Inspector General’s vision for people-centered policing. They offered to collaborate on intelligence-driven efforts to tackle cultism, drug abuse and other crimes. They also called for renewed trust and open dialogue between the police and community. ACP Mana acknowledged the concerns and urged constructive engagement. He promised to work with stakeholders on strategic responses and to strengthen police-community relations. He also advised residents to avoid unregistered motorcycles, which can be exploited by criminals.

Do we really expect a single meeting to shift deep mistrust around police extortion complaints?

Seems like the courtesy visit highlighted community trust, yet it's unclear what specific measures were proposed to tackle those extortion allegations.

While everyone praises community outreach, I doubt a single courtesy visit can curb deep-seated extortion practices overnight, no matter the good intentions.

Local leaders and ACP Mana should set up a clear reporting channel with regular follow-up meetings to monitor and resolve extortion complaints effectively.
