“They’ve Robbed Me of Peace” – Chimamanda Adichie Speaks Out after Court Blocks Inquest into Son’s Death

“They’ve Robbed Me of Peace” – Chimamanda Adichie Speaks Out after Court Blocks Inquest into Son’s Death — 1 of 6
1 / 6

Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband lost their 21-month-old son at a Lagos hospital in January. She has now publicly accused Euracare Hospital of delaying and obstructing the coroner’s inquest into his death. In a heartfelt letter made public in June, she detailed how her son was sedated for an MRI, never regained consciousness and died the following day. Chimamanda says she and her husband were initially promised an apology and the firing of the anesthesiologist. Instead, the hospital issued a hostile press statement and sought a court order to halt the inquiry. Chimamanda describes the hospital’s actions as a “monstrous cynical game” that has stripped her family of the peace and dignity to grieve. She demands transparency, a corrected death certificate, and a full account of the negligence she believes caused her son’s death. She thanks those offering support and urges continued prayers as she fights for justice and accountability in memory of her little boy.

It's surprising that a renowned hospital would delay a coroner's inquest, especially with such serious allegations from Chimamanda Adichie's family.

While obstruction is troubling, could legal delays sometimes protect hospitals from flawed investigations rather than conceal negligence?

Families should document every step with hospitals, request official timelines, and consult patient advocacy groups for guidance throughout the inquest process.
