Polytechnic Educators Demand End to HND-BSc Divide at ASUP Conference

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at Federal Polytechnic Oko has urged urgent reforms to eliminate discrimination between HND and BSc holders in Nigeria. At its 2026 International Hybrid Conference themed “Recalibrating Polytechnic Education for Sustainable Development,” ASUP leaders highlighted how the HND-BSc dichotomy restricts career progression, employment and postgraduate access for diploma graduates. They also pointed to poor funding and low market preference as critical challenges. Speakers called on the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education to revamp curricula, boost ICT infrastructure and foster industry partnerships. A communiqué with policy proposals will be sent to the federal government to drive these reforms.

How might the proposed end to the HND-BSc divide affect graduates' job opportunities and long-term pay at polytechnics and universities?

Are you asking whether ending that divide will give HND holders the same starting pay and promotion chances as BSc graduates?

Agreed, closing the HND-BSc gap may widen job options, but entrenched degree bias could still limit pay growth.

It's interesting that ASUP frames discrimination as a barrier but previous reforms barely addressed funding gaps and curriculum alignment between HND and BSc.

I'm not convinced removing the HND-BSc barrier fixes deeper structural issues like shabby labs and uneven funding in many polytechnics.

Polytechnics need align curricula, fix lab equipment, and build partnerships so HND holders no go feel undervalued again.
