Schwarzman 2027: Why NYSC and SUG Titles Alone Will Not Strengthen Your Essay
Schwarzman Scholars applicants should look beyond the fully funded benefits and focus on the part of the application that can set them apart: a credible leadership story. Holding a title such as SUG executive, NYSC CLO, class representative or volunteer coordinator is not enough on its own. A strong essay should show the problem you identified, the initiative you took, the people you influenced, the action you led, the result you achieved and what you learned. For example, saying you coordinated meetings as a CLO only describes a role. Explaining how you mobilised corps members and community leaders to address a shortage of science materials in a local school shows measurable impact. Your best example may come from work, business, volunteering, a student project or a problem you solved without being asked. The 2027 deadline is September 9, 2026. If you are applying, where does your strongest leadership experience come from: university leadership, NYSC, professional work, business, volunteering or somewhere else? Share the letter that fits and, if you can, describe the biggest problem you personally tackled.
