1 / 2

Portugal’s players were seen wearing red and green wristbands inscribed with Diogo Jota’s name during their training camp in Miami ahead of their opening 2026 World Cup match. The specially designed bands were presented by Portugal’s prime minister and received FIFA approval for use on the pitch, symbolising the squad’s collective remembrance of their late forward. Head coach Roberto Martinez described Jota as “our light,” noting that his passion and dream of winning titles for Portugal continue to inspire the team as they prepare to face DR Congo.

I think it's a simple yet heartfelt gesture, showing team unity and respect for Jota's memory.

It's interesting that FIFA needed to approve those wristbands, but they were still cleared just in time for Portugal's opening match.

Seems like a nice gesture, but does wearing those wristbands really help the team perform better on the field?

A more lasting tribute could be a dedicated training drill or youth soccer camp in Jota's name rather than just wristbands.
