Wike Denies Threatening Channels TV’s Seun Okinbaloye, Says Comment Was Figurative

Wike Denies Threatening Channels TV’s Seun Okinbaloye, Says Comment Was Figurative

The Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that his controversial remark about Channels TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye was purely figurative. He clarified in Abuja on April 7 that his words were taken out of context and never meant as a literal threat. Wike explained that he was frustrated by Okinbaloye’s line of questioning during a media briefing. He emphasized he did not intend violence, but used the phrase to express anger at what he saw as unfair coverage. Seun Okinbaloye, meanwhile, maintained that he would not be intimidated by such language. He argued that threats, even if rhetorical, have no place in a democratic society.

Clear guidelines on public remarks could prevent similar misinterpretations and help officials communicate more responsibly.
