Supreme Court Declares Ikenne Stool Vacant, Invalidates Onakade’s Installation
The Supreme Court on Tuesday nullified the installation of Oba Mosudi Adeyinka Onakade as Alakenne of Ikenne Remo. It upheld the Court of Appeal’s ruling that his 2011 emergence breached the 1998 Alakenne Chieftaincy Declaration. The court set aside his approval, declared the stool vacant and barred him from styling himself as Alakenne. The dispute began after the death of Oba Gilbert Akindoyin Awomuti, triggering contest among ruling houses. A High Court had upheld Onakade in 2020, but the Court of Appeal overturned that decision in March 2024. The Supreme Court also dismissed the Ogun State Government’s appeal. Prince Yomi Ademola Adeyiga-Adeneye, who challenged the chieftaincy, described the verdict as a “liberation” for Ikenne. He urged residents to remain calm as a fresh selection process begins.
