Court Reveals Retired Officers’ Admission of Knowledge in Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu
Drama unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja when prosecutors played video recordings of two suspects admitting prior knowledge of an alleged plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. Retired Navy Captain Erasmus Victor confessed he was informed of the plot by the alleged mastermind, Col. M. A. Ma’aji, over a stalled promotion. Victor said he advised against it but failed to alert authorities due to their personal ties. Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim admitted he received about ₦1.4–₦1.5 million and conducted reconnaissance around the Presidential Villa. Video evidence shows him photographing sensitive areas and using coded words like “fertiliser” and “farming” to discuss funding and operations. Defense lawyers challenged the voluntariness of the statements, but Justice Joyce Abdulmalik overruled objections and allowed the recordings. Proceedings have been adjourned to May 5 to further examine the evidence.
